Upskilling and holistic growth: GCash hones next generation of fintech leaders

Employees at Mynt, the parent company of GCash, are being equipped with new skill sets—particularly in technology, data science, and leadership—not only for career advancement, but also for their holistic professional growth.

The Void is not synonymous with stagnation; rather, it's a fertile ground for exploration and discovery. By understanding and embracing the Void, creatives can liberate themselves from the constraints of expectation and perfectionism. This liberation becomes a catalyst for fresh ideas, enabling a departure from the ordinary and a journey into uncharted territories of innovation.

Navigating the Void requires a willingness to confront uncertainty and silence the noise of external influences. It's a practice in mindfulness and self-discovery—a journey into the depths of one's own thoughts and emotions. In this solitude, creatives often find the raw materials for groundbreaking concepts, discovering connections and patterns that were previously obscured.

The process of engaging with the Void is not about avoiding challenges but transforming them into opportunities. It encourages a shift in perspective, viewing obstacles not as roadblocks but as stepping stones to innovation. By understanding 'the Void' as a realm of potential, creatives unlock the door to their most authentic and impactful work, revealing the beauty that emerges when the creative spirit is allowed to roam freely. In essence, the Void becomes not an abyss to be feared, but a sanctuary where creativity thrives, and our most brilliant ideas come to life.

The country's leading super finance app is doing so under GCash Fintech University (GFU), which is designed as the central learning and development arm of the company. Since 2022, the program has logged over 227,000 learning hours with participation of more than 2,400 employees. As a result, 85 percent of employees have reported greater confidence in their technical and strategic skills post-training.

Employees who have enrolled also cited the program's flexibility, mentorship, and the real-world relevance of training as instrumental to their growth and job satisfaction.

"At GCash, we believe that our people are our greatest innovation. By continuously developing their skills and mindsets, we’re not just preparing them for the future of work—we’re empowering them to shape it,"

Mynt Chief People Officer Robert Gonzales said.

Establishing GFU

GFU was established in 2022 in response to the rapid evolution of the fintech industry and the need to future-proof GCash’s workforce.

Its primary goal is to foster a culture of continuous learning, equipping employees with the skills, mindsets, and work structures needed to thrive and lead in the rapidly evolving fintech industry.

As innovation accelerated and competition intensified, HR recognized a critical gap: the need to continuously upskill employees to adapt, lead, and sustain the company’s position as the country’s leading finance super app.

GFU is inclusive and open to all employees—both tech and non-tech. Whether someone works in engineering, operations, or marketing, GFU provides learning pathways that promote professional growth and digital readiness across all functions.

Upskilling courses

The GFU offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends technical expertise with leadership development.

It trains employees in key fintech areas such as digital finance, product development, and inclusive financial solutions. Advanced programs in technology, engineering, and data science build capabilities in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision-making.

Complementing these are courses on risk management, compliance, and leadership, preparing employees to lead with integrity, adaptability, and strategic insight.

In particular, GFU has a data and AI certification program in partnership with Asian Institute of Management and De La Salle University. It covers specialized topics such as Math for Machine Learning, Geo-spatial Analysis, Advanced Hypothesis Testing, and Data Project Value Estimation. Through this immersive training and rigorous certification exam, participants learn to harness data and AI not just for technical excellence, but for advancing financial inclusion and responsible innovation.

GCash is making sure its employees are aligned to the high level of standards for product management fundamentals. As such, the GFU offers a product management certification program, which seeks to integrate AI, data and product management expertise.

Through the Solutions Architect Program, GCash is training a new set of expert technical talents who have knowledge in information security, cloud-native technologies, platform engineering, event-driven architectures, and microservices, among others. Most participants successfully transition to architect roles, supporting strategic business growth, and the program is closely linked to broader GCash career development models that promote long-term upskilling and internal mobility.

With the Near Hire Program, GCash enables its employees to accelerate into software engineering roles or advance from developer to architect. Participants experience hands-on training tailored to the company's hybrid skills model, ensuring they are equipped to deliver vital innovations that support the everyday needs of its users.

Lastly, the leading super finance app's Citizen Developer Program empowers every GCash team member to be more than just a user—to become an innovator within our digital community. It offers courses for employees from all backgrounds, not just tech, to learn to build solutions, automate tasks, and solve real challenges.

Towards continuous learning

To keep up with the evolving fintech landscape, GCash regularly updates the training modules, reflecting the technological, regulatory, and business changes.

The super finance app is also leveraging learning platforms powered by artificial intelligence and analytics for more targeted development and personalized learning paths.

Moving forward, GCash aims to further institutionalize mentorship, knowledge transfer, and internal leadership development to ensure business continuity and succession readiness.

"Our vision is to build a culture where learning never stops. Through GFU, we’re not only upskilling our people—we’re shaping leaders who will drive innovation, ensure business continuity, and carry forward our mission of Finance for All,"

Gonzales concluded.
